TEDxTokyo is based on the famed TED conference, held annually in Vancouver, Canada. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design.
TEDx events are organized independently by communities to bring together people doing interesting things in or near the location of the event.
As with other TEDx events, TEDxTokyo is a combination of videos from the big daddy TED conferences and live speakers/performers. The goal is to spark deep discussion and connection amongst the audience.
To give you a taste of what you’re in for, the 2014 event included performances of caligraphy, ukelele and gagaku (traditional Japanese orchestral music) as well as presentations on subjects including Burning Man, space sweepers, regenerative medicine and blind soccer.
TEDxTokyo was the first TEDx event to be held outside North America when it was launched in 2009.
If you’re interested in speaking at TEDxTokyo, or you would like to recommend someone to speak at the event, you can put your application in here.
Lastly, here is Ukulele player extraordinaire Jake Shimabukuro performing at TEDxTokyo 2010.
Later in the year, there is another TEDx event aimed at youth and their teachers – TEDxTokyoTeachers & TEDxYouth@Tokyo
