More commonly known as “Comiket”, as the name suggests this is the 91st time the biannual Comic Market has been held.
The focus of the event is not on the big publishers but on “dojinshi” – small, independent artists and publishers who often create comics in small runs that erm… borrow from more well known franchises. So if you’re looking for a mash-up of the Crayon Shin-chan and Doraemon universes, you’ll probably find it here.
Both the summer and winter Comikets are also among the biggest events on the Japan cosplay calendar each year. If you would like to cosplay, you should be aware that you need to pay to cosplay and you should get changed when you get there – which partly explains the huge number of wheeled suitcases being pulled by attendees.
